Team news and form
Manchester City continue to do the business on the pitch despite the noise around their legal case off it. Enzo Maresca’s side have 21 points from seven wins, thrashed AEK Athens 5-1 in the Champions League in midweek with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick, and are one win away from becoming only the eighth English top-flight team to win their first eight games. On the road they have won all four competitive matches this season by a combined 10-1. Their defeat in Paris (2-4 against PSG) shows they can be got at, and Antoine Semenyo is out with a knee injury. Erling Haaland is fully fit after being rested last time out.
Aston Villa are 12th with eight points but are unbeaten in their last five matches or more, depending on how you count them, including a 3-2 win at Tottenham and a 3-1 win over Viking in Europe in midweek. Unai Emery’s side are still chasing their first Premier League win at Villa Park this season (D1, L2), and they have registered the fewest shots on target in the league (22). Even so, they go over 3.5 goals in five of their last six games, and so do City.
Villa are without Amadou Onana (long-term, torn ACL), Matteo Ruggeri (thigh) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (hamstring, three to four weeks). Johan Manzambi is doubtful with a calf problem, and Modou Cisse is also questionable. Ian Maatsen is back in training and could come back in at left-back. Emiliano BuendĂa scored in midweek and has three of his last four Premier League goals after the 75th minute, including an assist for the winner the last time Villa beat City here. Haaland is the fastest player in Premier League history to 100 goals, but has not scored against Villa in his last four meetings.
Head-to-head – Recent meetings
- Man City 1-2 Aston Villa (24 May 2026, Premier League)
- Aston Villa 1-0 Man City (26 October 2025, Premier League)
- Man City 2-1 Aston Villa (22 April 2025, Premier League)
Villa have won four of the last six Premier League meetings with City (L2), as many as in the previous 35 (D5, L26). Emery has managed 11 games against City without a draw (W4, L7). City have not scored before half-time in seven of their eight away league goals this term.
Why we’re backing it
The head-to-head record is the main argument. Villa have won each of the last two against City, Emery’s sides push the top teams hard, and Villa are unbeaten in their last three home league games against the table toppers of the day (W2, D1). The Football Whispers model makes City 56% to win, Villa 21% and the draw about 23%, which makes Villa or draw roughly a 44% shot against a price that implies 43%. We see that as a fair price for a game that is closer than the table suggests.
The risk is City’s form. They have won all seven league games and a rested Haaland is a scary prospect, so the 1.67 on a City win is a fair price rather than a value one, and we make that the safe option. Villa have also not won at home in the league yet this season. Both sides score freely, so we expect goals, with both teams to score at 57% and the model projecting about 1.9 goals for City and 1.1 for Villa.
Betting tips summary
- Safe pick: Man City to win @ 1.67
- Value pick: Aston Villa or draw (double chance) @ 2.30 <- our recommended bet
- Long shot: Emiliano BuendĂa anytime goalscorer @ 5.00
